Sahana,

That is a wonderful question. For the initial launch of RoseLeaf we will be looking for SG employees to step up as mentors and regional chapter leaders. As such, we have discussed SG holding formal mentor trainings, where we can address these issues, and discuss ways in which mentors can foster realistic expectations for both themselves, as well as, those they mentor.

As we mention in our Fostering Financial Independence page, after joining RoseLeaf, local community members will be able to apply to become chapter leaders and/or mentors, in essence, passing on the knowledge and support they have gained through the network. In order for new members to become formal mentors, we could require them to go through this training, as well, and perhaps be appointed or 'sponsored' by regional mentors and chapter leaders before they can assume the responsibilities of mentoring others.

It will also be beneficial to host regular forums where RoseLeaf members can meet to evaluate the mentoring program, and discuss if it is meeting their needs and expectations. I think these evaluations could also be implemented through online surveying techniques, but no matter what, they should be a regular occurrence, so that any negative impacts can be identified, resolved and overcome.

Hi,
I have a question regarding the mentorship idea. How would you ensure that there are no negative impacts (expectations that the mentors be able to deliver "miracles", ability of mentors to deal with under-previledged women? etc.)

Hi -- This topic is way out of my league however your project and mission statements are very well detailed. The one thing I am unclear about (perhaps I missed this somewhere) - but is this a national and international organization you are proposing? If it is international have you thought about ways to meet technology accessibility (internet / computer access) to those women in 3rd world countries. I mean.. this may totally not be an element you intend to explore in your project.

Regardless, I wish you all the best of luck in your plan and continue to promote, promote, promote! Even if you are not the 1st place winner (which i hope you are!) keep plugging this idea! Equality and mentorship is very important in a world full of chaos and hoops to jump, especially for minorities. Best of luck!

This is an excellent idea, especially given the fact that many single-moms enrolled in welfare-to-work programs, work several low-wage jobs and remain at or below the poverty level. A program such as this could give them the skills they need to run their own businesses, chart their own course and move them out of poverty. The mentoring, learning opportunities and financial capital will be invaluable.

Women do not look the same "on paper", and therefore need special lending officers sensitive to the individual's needs.

Yo opino que esto esta muy bien por que le estan dando a mujeres oportunidades que antes no tenian. Tambien les abren las puertas y les dan oportunidad de crecer como personas y como grupo.
