At the core of CSR Europe are our corporate members and national partner organisations. The expertise and diversity that this unique group of organisations and individuals bring together form the platform upon which CSR Europe undertakes its activities and provides services to members.
In October 2010, CSR Europe launched a joint Enterprise 2020 initiative to address societal challenges through collaborative action and shape the business contribution to the European Union’s Europe 2020 strategy for smart, sustainable and inclusive growth.

Keeping it simple, but interesting, current but long-lasting.
It may seem like a pipe dream, but join in on this message board, that's the other major aspect for this project, community participation.
This isn't rocket science, nor does it need to be. It's about pushing the non-sense aside, at least for some of us, and begin a whole supportive, fun community!
It's also hugely important that it's easy to use, clear of clutter, and annoying ads. So, a major goal is to find funding and/or sponsors that will support the development of this community internet project, to achieve ad-free sites.
Major philosophy behind this work: That this web project will help everyone find something useful, needed, interesting, and fun. So, when someone comes to find everyday city, community, neighborhood information, they will also notice other information for services if or when they need them. Also, opportunities to participate, volunteer, join in community building activities.
I've been spending a great deal of time conceptualizing the potential for a network like this, how it can best effectively connect people with help and support (first, and foremost), and with related information. Meaning that, CSR Direct has priorities, but is for everyone, or all aspects of our community, not just certain parts.
In addition to "external CSR", considerable significance also attaches to "internal CSR". This was stressed in particular by small and medium-sized entrepreneurs: Dealing with workers in an honest, fair manner, and training young people, is not only an ethical question, but also of massive significance in order to achieve business objectives. Workers who receive fair treatment are more highly motivated, which in turn is a major guarantee of entrepreneurial success.
The goal is to conserve or create the basis for a life in health and prosperity. There was agreement that CSR goes beyond compliance with legal provisions
CSR is orientated here towards the idea of sustainability: Enterprises minimise the negative consequences of their activities and promote positive developments in society and in the environment.
CSR is therefore not a goal in itself; it always contributes to corporate success
Secondly, consumers increasingly ask for goods which were produced in a sustainable manner. Irresponsible actions, by contrast, can lead to their being boycotted by consumers
Firstly, it promotes worker motivation, which benefits product quality
Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) is the sine qua non for economic success.
Enterprises' social responsibility is restricted to making profits
Profit and CSR - a contradiction in terms?
It will focus on seven core principles: respect for human rights; transparency; accountability; ethical behavior; respect for stakeholder interests; respect for rule of law and respect for international norms of behavior.
This is designed to encourage the implementation of best practice in social responsibility worldwide.
Future of CSR. International Organization for Standardization (ISO) is working on the creation of ISO 26000.
When polled most people say that they do not trust companies to be ethical and to be the mechanism of change that they are in this day and age. Corporate America today may no longer be merely the leader but the keeper of American culture – and law.
CSR is important for a number of reasons but the most astounding reason is that “out of the one hundred largest economies of the world today, fifty-one are corporations and only forty-nine are nation states
Corporate Social Responsibility is also known as corporate responsibility and corporate citizenship. It is way of self-regulating an organization by internal means (best implemented from the top-down). Its focus is to transform the present economy for the benefit of real world progress.
They also posit that CSR is beneficial to companies for a number of reasons, the least of which is profits although, it seems that they do not hinder and often improve profit margins
The above Wall Street Journal and Forbes articles argue that there is a facet of ethical corporate acts commonly referred to as corporate social responsibility.
A lot of reactions come from the phrase business ethics. It ranges from the extremely positive of ‘excellent’ or ‘oh, that’s great’ to the less favorable of ‘is there such a thing?’ or ‘that’s an oxymoron’
Countries will compete to have the best ethical practices – competitive pressure for foreign investment has created a system where less stringent for human rights standards or environmental regulations attract more investors
The ethical consumer will drive change – again, consumers are looking for price and convenience, just look at Wal-Mart
There will be a competition to be the most ethical business – often CSR is just good PR without any incentive for changes in behavior
The market can deliver both short-term financial returns and long-term social benefits – the interests of businesses are often at odds and responsible investment is unlikely to pay off as quickly as the stock market requires
Be respectful, fair and open in your employment practices
Do not pollute your environment or other environments, and adhere to laws and regulations
Do not use predatory practices in offshore manufacturing, such as child labor
Do not use predatory practices in offshore manufacturing, such as child labor
If something about the product endangers the consumer, be forthright and let the public know
A quality product, not misrepresented through marketing
Transparency in financial reporting
CSR should focus on:
While it’s always nice to hear about a company building green or donating to charities for many corporate social responsibility is more about what the company does not do
Even those who are aware of the impact a company has on the world will find it extremely difficult to find a completely responsible or irresponsible supplier of their needed wares
The public is more concerned with price, convenience and quality when purchasing products.
Part of the reason why CSR does not necessarily pay is that only a handful or consumers know or care about the environmental or social records of more than a handful of firms
While many have claimed that a socially responsible company will do better in business there has been little evidence to support this across the economy
Managers should try to act more responsibly. But they should not expect the market to necessarily reward them–or punish their less responsible competitors
Corporations are beholden to their shareholders. They exist to make a profit. For this reason what good can a corporate social responsibility statement or plan really do?
auditing/verification of reports, production processes, supply chain standards or products
voluntary reporting guidelines;
voluntary codes and standards for corporate behavior;
A wide range of CSR initiatives has emerged in recent years and include:
the growing recognition by leadership companies and organizations of the need for the CSR agenda to address public sector governance issues and to scale up the impact of CSR activities so that they can improve the delivery of sustainable development at a systemic level
the openness of leadership companies and CSR initiatives to working in
partnership with a wide range of stakeholders, including the UN, governments, other businesses and civil society organizations, including at the local level in developing countries;
the capacity for innovation and openness to change shown by a range of
international CSR initiatives
the high levels of commitment shown by some key leadership companies;
However, it is clear that the CSR agenda also has some important strengths, including:
The language of CSR in the West increasingly needs to address ‘a visible commitment to capacity building in the developing countries to enhance their ability to expand exports and trade as a means of promoting development and poverty alleviation through trade.’
CSR is a simple extension of western standards as a proxy global
standard and CSR operating as a non-tariff barrier to trade.
A lack of understanding of what CSR means—and how it is perceived—in an Asian context: This has several dimensions. As Canon in Japan recently noted, ‘the Anglo-Saxon debate on corporate responsibility seems to be centered only on their historical and social criteria, which naturally deal with Catholicism,Protestantism and Western European Individualism.’ In addition, there is a risk that a strong and sustained focus on China and India does not crowd out visibility for innovative practice—and an appetite to learn—in other markets.
At the same time, the significance of developments in Asia, especially Japan, which links the two areas is being increasingly recognized.
Moreover, in developing countries it is important to highlight not just why but how responsible behavior and good governance can contribute to a more favorable investment climate.
There is an imbalance in the CSR debate which fails to distinguish where CSR relates—and does not relate—to corporate governance. In this area recent developments in the UK at the Commonwealth Business Council in particular, and also the OECD are of note as well as policyorientated research at Henley Management College.
A lack of understanding of how corporate governance links to CSR: While there is much noise there is still surprisingly little that sets out, in succinct and clear language, how the two are related.
At the same time, variable standards and a lack of transparency
by a growing number of (western) NGOs which undertake advocacy, consultancy and third-party auditing, all too often in tandem, continues to constrain confidence in the processes involved.
Reputational risks of CSR advocates: The experience of Shell and Ahold, by their own admission and among others, has underlined the limitations of pursuing CSR in a context in which corporate governance and leadership is weak. It has also fuelled the charges of CSR by some as corporate spin or ‘greenwashing, justifiably or not
The CBC Guidelines for Corporate Citizenship provide guidelines of good
corporate citizenship derived from CBC corporate members in Asia and beyond. They are a useful template for an international approach to CSR which has relevance and rigor in an Asian context.
Business in the Commonwealth has become increasingly aware of its role in helping to make globalization work in a way that combines economic advance with social development. Indeed, many Commonwealth companies are leading the way by demonstrating good corporate citizenship in action, “living out” the business principles that they have established and articulated in different ways.
Corporate citizenship is the commitment of business to contribute to sustainable economic development, working with employees, their families, the local community, and society at large to improve the quality of life of all their stakeholders.”

Sustainability of the markets companies rely upon for income
Moral and ethical reasons—to ‘do the right thing’
There are seven reasons why CSR matters
http://www.centrica.com/index.asp?pageid=1042&blogid=326
A number of major global trends in CSR and SRI can be identified
The emphasis is on creating not only sustainable shareholder value but also sustainable social value. SRI is an investment approach which, in addition to conventional financial criteria, evaluates and selects companies on the basis of social and ethical criteria such as legal compliance, employment practices, human rights, consumer issues, contribution to community, and environmental issues, while seeking stable returns.
CSR refers to business practices characterized by extensive disclosure and transparency, which companies initiate to fulfil ethical responsibilities towards employees, communities, and the environment
Corporate social responsibility (CSR) and socially responsible investment (SRI) have provided opportunities for companies to align their activities with broader societal expectations. But there is still a view that this is
window-dressing and does not go to the heart of the business
http://www.corporate-eye.com/blog/2011/09/renewing-csr-3/
I feel now is the time that we must reflect on what has happened in the last half of the 20th century and start working to create a society where we can pursue the true purpose of life, setting targets on the quality of individual life and the richness of mind, rather than on the economy of scale
http://www.corporate-eye.com/blog/2010/03/greening-corporate-website/
The time is changing drastically
CSR has two aspects, namely, defense and offense. From the global viewpoint, we need to take a “defensive” approach primarily in the domain of compliance.
With respect to human rights, the environment, legal and ethical issues, and the labor standards, we need to have common philosophies.
As such, CSR is no new concept. It has been practiced in each country or region based on its inherent ideas fostered through its history and culture. Today, however, in the era of market economy and globalization, we are being required to conduct our behavior, not only based on our own ideas, but also in compliance with certain international principles and standards
From another point of view, this means that our efforts to enhance our
ties and relationship with all the members of society lead to the mutual trust between different organizations
I believe that gaining the trust and confidence of society is the very basis of
corporate management and the sense of trust is the key to fostering and maintaining a corporate brand
Today, when I look at not only Japan but elsewhere in the world, I cannot help but feel that public confidence in companies is being substantially undermined. This is not a problem only of companies but of the society as a whole. The sense of trust is disappearing from individuals, companies and social organizations as well as from all kinds of relationships. And behind the disappearing sense of trust lies the problem we face today
The second driver of CSR varies from country to country and region to region. Each society has different issues to be solved with the help of a business corporation. People in the USA suggest that American corporations have been externalizing costs in order to report ever-increasing quarterly earnings, with costs passed on to everybody
except for shareholders, such as consumers, workers, or the environment and community. In order to rectify such an excessively shareholder-centered management style in the USA, CSR is emphasized.
This is one reason why business corporations are now trying to
develop CSR policies and also trying to establish internal systems that make it possible to reduce negative impacts and increase the positive influences over external stakeholders.
Some developing countries might deregulate their standards or regulations in the fields of environment and labor because they want to attract more foreign capital. Thus business corporations that are operating worldwide enjoy an enormous amount of freedom today. However, freedom should be
followed by responsibility. In the absence of responsibility, globalization itself might come to a dead end
There is no single government or single law enforcement body to apply the same laws and regulations to all players. International agreements exist but can easily be ignored in a number of countries. In addition, most developing countries have very comprehensive laws and regulations but lack effective infrastructure to enforce them.
There are two levels of reasons. The first relates to globalization itself. In a sense, globalization is the creation of a new business era when a business corporation can enjoy an enormous amount of freedom.
Why is CSR required?
Why CSR Is Necessary
that is a very interesting story Natalija thanks for sharing it with us
In this case, the company benefits because it can do business in a country. The second party, the foreign official, even if he did not receive any money, still benefited because the people in the country thought that project was promoted thanks to the official’s efforts. Therefore, the second party also benefited from this decision. The third party—society and the future generations—also benefited from the project, and thus it created win-win situation
After an intensive series of discussions among senior management, the
company decided to provide money to the foreign official but in a creative manner. They provided the money transparently, in a way that everybody knew the money transaction through the foreign official was for a national environmental protection project.
he representative faced an ethical dilemma. He knew only too well that this kind of action is clearly against American law but at the same time the company was eager to do business there.
Here is a real example. One American multinational wanted to do business in a developing country. It submitted materials for approval, but a couple of weeks before signing a contract, a representative of that company was asked to provide a favor to a high-ranking official of that country
As previously mentioned, social contribution is not just providing monetary
donations but includes practical or creative action making it possible to overcome ethical dilemmas
Social Contributions: Companies exert positive influences and impacts to
help others or, for example, develop environmentally friendly technologies.
Ethical Practices: Companies try to avoid any action resulting in a negative impact on others and any action that might cause harm or damage to others.
Legal Compliance: The compliance section or the ethics office is mainly
concerned with establishing the legal way to avoid the application of laws. The objective is to find the loophole that makes it possible to avoid the reach of the law. If international agreements are ratified and codified into domestic laws, companies at this level will try to comply with international agreements; but other than that, companies will not comply with such agreements willingly
Recently, the concept of social contribution is likely to be understood in a much broader sense, going beyond a purely monetary donation to include action to overcome ethical dilemmas that a business organization might face
Ethical practices denote corporate acts that comply with not only the letter but also the spirit of laws and regulations. Social contributions are how companies act to help others and bring about positive impacts and
influences in the community, environment, and for future generations
Legal compliance means corporate acts that comply with the letter of laws and regulations, including those that are related to human rights, environment, labor, or consumer protection.
There are three groups of issues: legal compliance, ethical practices, and social contributions.
What issues does CSR cover?
In addition, CSR issues are not only relevant to developed economies but to developing ones as well, since all business activities are interlinked in the worldwide supply chain.
Although the guidelines on SR by the ISO have yet to be released, the most
important element in CSR is for corporations to be proactive, not passive. They should not engage in CSR activities because of external pressure but to create greater corporate value, which cannot be judged from a short-term perspective
The International Standards Organization (ISO) is now in the process of
establishing guidelines for social responsibility (SR)
The basic point of CSR is that it leads to higher productivity
It is suggested that CSR can resolve the contradictory desires of employers, investors, and other stakeholders which stem from the unequal aspects of information exchange among them.
The negative one relates to legal compliance, which is associated with compulsory or regulatory features. The positive connotation is associated
with social contributions to local, regional, national, or even global society.
As a result, despite the mounting interest in CSR worldwide, it appears the concept still lacks a clear-cut definition. Overall, however, it may be inferred CSR contains both negative and positive connotations.
It is not easy to define CSR. A main reason for this is the presence of various stakeholders. With the globalization of the economy, such issues as environmental degradation and violations of human rights are adding new meanings to the concept of CSR.
The advent of sophisticated information and communication technology has
completely changed ways of doing business. As such, companies cannot ignore the voices of various stakeholders. Particularly in today’s globalizing market when business activities easily transcend beyond national boundaries, companies must take into account every possible impact of their business activities
I hope that readers will gain new insights from this publication on how CSR should be interpreted and implemented in the ever-developing global economy
I would like to take this opportunity to express my deep gratitude to the
distinguished speakers at the forum.
Shareholders’ dividends must be guaranteed, and the community must be convinced of the merit of corporate activity. CSR weighs all these divergent interests and tries to strike an appropriate balance among them
Establishing sound CSR systems needs the involvement of a wide range of
stakeholders, such as workers, customers, and shareholders as well as the community.
Workers’ rights must be respected, and customers’ needs must be satisfied.
Establishing CSR is not a simple task, nor is it free from risks and problems. CSR
requires support not only from shareholders and investors but also from customers,
employees, and communities. One conclusion drawn from both successful and failed
examples of attempts to practice CSR is that top management must have a strong belief in
the role of CSR within the organization. A lack of such belief has often led corporations to
lose brand value and a good corporate image built up over many years. Bankruptcy may
be even result
Broadly defined as a “responsibility for business corporations to observe the social
rules and contribute to the society within their scope,” CSR can lead to more sustainable
corporations by encouraging good relationships with society. Although it appears natural
to expect corporations to conduct business in a manner that maintains good relations
with various stakeholders and improves the environment, it is not easy for all to achieve
the required level of CSR
Today, businesses are expected to extend their attention beyond stockholders,
customers, and employees to include other stakeholders such as the community and
environment. The concept of corporate social responsibility (CSR) emerged from such
expectations and now consists of transparent organizational management; careful
consideration of the global environment, human rights, and employment; and, in
particular, compliance with ordinances, regulations, and laws
The social responsibility forum aims to translate social responsibility programs initiated by companies into effective strategies, in addition to drawing up a national plan for corporate social commitment in order to fight poverty by investing in human resources. It will also focus on the environment

Corporations are human endeavors, and all human endeavors should benefit our society and reflect our morals.
are empolyees really aware of csr policy and what is their view
That in turn has made the term corporate responsibility (CR) much more familiar than ever before in boardrooms across the globe. The line is far from solid, but CR can be seen as the extension of governance beyond simple compliance to embrace broader social values.
The over-riding goal in every case has been to restore investor confidence. However, these changes have also brought with them the realisation that good governance is a key topic not only for shareholders but also for a much broader set of stakeholders, including customers, employees, suppliers and the wider community.
Study reveals CR importance growing in decision-making
Quite apart from the “ifs” in this argument, there are plenty of uncertainties:
Does the case for corporate social responsibility apply to all kinds of company?
Can benefits aggregate across an economy or is it a zero-sum game?
Does it introduce inefficiencies when scaled up to the level of the economy as a whole, as classical economics would argue?
It looks like a no-brainer: if there is a business case for corporate social responsibility and enough companies take it up, that will make whole economies more competitive – so governments should be encouraging corporate social responsibility in pursuit of national economic strategies. But brains are needed
The business case for Corporate Social Responsibility has been debated for many years. In a survey of the subject, Roger Cowe from Royal Dutch/Shell Group finds that while links to national and regional competitiveness are less clear, governments and think tanks are enthusiastic about the idea.
But corporations must in addition meet a higher moral standard:
To minimize activities that harm life or the environment
To be truthful
To bring joy to life and reduce suffering, even if in very small and mundane ways
To stop encouraging people's craving or addiction
There are many ways that corporations do benefit society:
They provide jobs
They produce goods and services that people want
They provide a return to investors
Corporations are human endeavors, and all human endeavors should benefit our society and reflect our morals. They should provide more than just investor return.
Is the only mission of the corporate world to make money for shareholders?
What is the full mission for responsible corporations?
If the customer who is ignored still chooses to give money to the company that ignores them then absent a monopoly how would that be bad profits. Just a question.
My quibble with this is that it totally releases the customer from any responsibility whatsoever. It is one thing if a customer is coerced, which I presume would be illegal in many cases, but quite another if the customer is merely ignored.
As to Fred Reichheld’s good and bad profits, he says "Whenever a customer feels misled, mistreated, ignored, or coerced, then profits from that customer are bad."
So how does a company educate its customers on the realities of sustainability while attempting to increase market share? That is the rub.
In retail relationships, the focus on helping customers "go green" can be helpful. However, it is consuming more and more stuff that is the most unsustainable act of all.
They can provide superior products or at least products free of regulatory and safety requirements which are in high demand even for many unsustainable companies.
In addition, consider this: in business-to-business transactions especially, minimizing negative EHS and community impacts can help companies gain business advantage. Businesses sincerely pursuing sustainable development often seek out vendors and customers that embrace sustainability.
A customer well-educated in the tenets of sustainability will choose not to buy oil products. However, if a company can convince customers that there are environmentally benign ways to extract, process and use fossil fuel products, then that company can gain some business advantage - albeit an unethical advantage.
This is an interesting discussion. If you take the example of an oil company trying to be green, how will educating their customers help them gain a business advantage?
Should you still strive to run a more efficient operation? Yes. - I agree 100% and not for PR or pleasing external groups, but to ensure business continuity in a sustainable manner. That is profitable.
At the end of the day the purchase decision for many is weighted heavily toward financial cost of the transaction and therefor the marketing has to sell the 'what's in it for me' message first. Each individual has their own emotional connections to brands and products, some are green, ethical / Fairtrade, locally focused or charitable and the marketers need more than ever to understand the emotional intelligence of their target audience.
Unfortunately the general population are relatively ambivalent about sustainability credentials at the moment of purchase. There is definitely an improving awareness of the range of ethical issues but consumers, along with most businesses, are still learning.
CSR has always been about taking a alternative lens to a business to maximise profitability, but again exploited and badly implemented by those not prepared to educate themselves appropriately. Keep it simple, keep it focused and keep it true and it will always provide a return on investment.
It did spark an idea after I cam across what BITC had offered as "the case for responsible business". I realised that the case had been made as a call for addressing poverty and was embedded in a formal business plan describing how a 'profit for purpose' approach in which business existing entirely for social purpose could be deployed in continuous social re-investment which seed funded new social enterprises. More recently I'd read this approach described as 'revolving funding'.
Many thanks for all the suggestions as to what a responsible business should look like.
If you've heard that ' It isn't easy being green' I can assure you that taking an ethical stance in business is far more difficult. You will experience hostility, calumny and defamation and come to know how the road to hell is paved with good intentions. You will be shunned by potential customers and find support organisation disinterested. The stress of doing the right thing as you see it, may even lead to chronic illness.
The profound simplicity of Gandhi's 'be the change you wish to see in the world' should tell us that talking about how business should be isn't going to cut it. Harvard and Mckinsey may well have undergone a Damascene conversion, but they've just begun saying what has been actioned for more than a decade.
"The anti-values of greed, individualism and exclusion should be replaced by solidarity, common good and inclusion. The objective of our economic and social activity should not be the limitless, endless, mindless accumulation of wealth in a profit-centred economy but rather a people-centred economy that guarantees human needs, human rights, and human security, as well as conserves life on earth. These should be universal values that underpin our ethical and moral responsibility."
This was something which was coherent with what we describe as a fundamental predicate and where we were in tackling the issue of children being discarded and abandoned to state care, where they become a cash cow for organised crime.
Around the same time we also became partners of the Charter for Compassion, seeing this as a reflection of what we stood for in business. At the core of the charter is the Golden Rule of reciprocity, the understanding that should do to others what one hoped would by done to ourselves, and the inverse of this, that we should not do to others what we would not want others doing to us.
'Ethics' is surely an abstract concept unless we state our position on a range of issues. I know from becoming acquainted with Michael through becoming a member of SEE What You Are Buying Into, that this was something they aimed for too.
'Ethics' is surely an abstract concept unless we state our position on a range of issues. I know from becoming acquainted with Michael through becoming a member of SEE What You Are Buying Into, that this was something they aimed for too.
Nestle for example will make a huge noise about fairtrade coffee or chocolate to give the impression that all their products might be similarly sourced. I feel that would have much more credibility if they openly stated the % of their products that were fair trade and their strategy to improve the %.
An answer that isn't perfect is more responsible than no answer or an answer which is (deliberately) misleading.
I feel that this leads more credence to other things they will claim regarding their products and services and how responsible their operations are. I feel it would be a useful in the fight against greenwashing if more businesses took this approach and that they would ulitimately be rewarded for this responsible behaviour by an increasingly ethically demanding market.
i am interested in the idea of the responsible business that is prepared to answer the 'difficult questions' and not only answer the difficult questions that suit them. I think a responsible business is one that can openly acknowledge the areas of weakness, and demonstrate a willingness and a strategy to improve.
Hope this contributes something to the debate! Keep up the great work.

http://www.guardian.co.uk/social-enterprise-network/2011/jun/29/shared-value-supply-chains-mutualism
I've been thinking a lot recently - not about what a responsible business looks like but about the practical steps businesses can take to achieve this status. For one thing, I'd love to see more big businesses working with social businesses in their supply chains as one way of delivering mutual value - both social and financial.
We described this approach as 'profit for purpose and our purpose today is poverty eradication and childcare reform in Eastern Europe.
Today we find the argument for business with an embedded social purpose is rippling around business schools and economic thinking and in an article for Sustainable Business Forum, I describe the impact of a working model.
The approach proposed is influenced by Carl R Rogers person centered approach to counselling, with the aim of creating an economic environment in which people living in impoverished conditions may flouris and grow. It is described as people-centered economic development.
We begin by proposing that people should be the central focus of business and economics and with a fundamental predicate, which can be seen as reciprocity that humans are not disposable.
First we challenge the inherent assumption in laissez-faire capitalism that the sole responsibility of business it to returm a profit to investors. What if we ask, a business existed for a social objective and it's directors agreed this by altering the company charter to reflect this principle? It would do business for profit and invest in community objectives.
http://comment.rsablogs.org.uk/2011/03/04/driving-democracy/
The second is the need for meaning in its work and organisational purpose - in short, having a sense of accountability to larger, cultural ideas and to the deeper, intuitive reflections that help us steer a more enlightened course. These two elements constitute the idea of holistic democracy which, I argue, wise organisations aim to adapt and develop to their particular settings
An ambitious question! Important that it should be raised. One of the key questions raised by the idea of the responsible business is how it sustains a commitment to acting responsibly. Two factors are important in this, I suggest. One is enabling the participation of its members (and external stakeholders) in the development and direction-setting of the organisation - in short, integrating forms of organisational democracy into its culture.
"Seeking to minimise negative social and environmental impacts and maximise positive ones;"
How about...
"Ensuring that it has a net positive impact socially and environmentally."
Seeking is a bit too wishy-washy for me - it is too easy for someone to say without actually doing.
I'd add...
"Ensuring that ALL waste products are someone else's raw materials."
Having a purpose beyond maximising financial profit;
Innovating for the public good;
Holding values, such as those described above, as precious and important and as a means of informing or guiding decisions and actions;
Proving these things are manifest right across the organisation and do not just reside in the marketing department.
Please add to this list and offer any feedback on these initial thoughts.
Being open and honest;
Being accountable and willing to explain;
Being frank, speaking plainly, answering legitimate questions, never obfuscating or flannelling;
Being fair, not exploiting anyone along the way;
Seeking to minimise negative social and environmental impacts and maximise positive ones;
So first things first, what do you think makes them responsible? How do they behave and/or differ from the norm? Here, for your perusal and comment, are some of my ideas as to how they 'do responsibility':
I am quite sure they exist. I want to identify them. I think they are a very important part of a more sustainable future. I think that a lot of people would be happy to support them - as consumers, as employees, as investors for example - and thus provide incentives for other businesses to follow suit.
What does a responsible business look like?
Would love to hear people's thoughts on what social entrepreneurs can do to make their organisations more attractive to big business supply chains - in order to create both social and financial value for the big business. Also what the private, public and social enterprise support sectos can do to strengthen these ties
We've almost been an organisation of two halves - a training project, and then abusiness. Different financial obligations at each stage would be hugely helpful. If there could be some move so that those contributions start when trading starts, that would be a huge help.
We're coming towards the end of our grant funded start up phase where we spent ages recruiting, training, supporting, training, reminding - before we could start trading. But all the time people have been employed - including two of us full time running the project - we have been having to pay PAYE and NICS and our only income has been grants.
As a social enterprise focused on job creation and empowerment through work, I'd have liked to see some financial support around PAYE and NICS. A reduction in these costs or a waiver on them until trading starts, perhaps.
How useful is this to you now you have the accreditation - or if you are working towards this how do you feel it will help you in the future?
I would be very interested to hear from those who are already registered as a B Corp or those working towards it.
I believe it is worth investigating the B Corp model as started in the US. This gives a standard for Profit for Purpose organisations to work to and requires no asset lock.
Even now when you mention social enterprise some of those involved in charities still think you are talking about 'business' and those in business think you are talking 'charity'. Even more worrying is that some key people involved in infrastructure organisations and those involved in public procurement too assume they have a good understanding of this - however, in my experience - I am not sure they do !
As those who are involved in supporting organisations with a social ethos know only too well.... 'confusion rules'.
There is still so much confusion around organisations that trade to achieve a social purpose and those that use the majority of their profits for social gain - 'social enterprise', not least because the Social Enterprise Mark appears to only relate to those organisations that have an asset lock.

Hello Bazinga
I believe Profit with Purpose businesses should get some recognition. Examplars and full 'case studies' to help lead others in that direction would be useful.
I'd be very grateful for your thoughts and experiences such as:
- What do PwP businesses ask from Government(s)?
- Can you give any examples of successful Governmental support for 'PwP' (Profit with Purpose) businesses, here or abroad?
More generally I'm writing about support for Social Enterprise, which includes charities and non-profits, However I'm most interested in this often overlooked zone of 'Profit with Purpose' - the profit-making businesses which engage also with social objectives. A large percentage of businesses now have some sort of CSR/CR aspect to them, albeit along a varying scale of commitment or challenge.
Dear all, I would be interested in your views on this subject as I'm sure you all have different perspectives. I'm researching it for a well known thinktank,
How could (should?) Government support businesses engaged in 'Profit with Purpose'?

One information : The term CSR came in to common use in the early 1970s although it was seldom abbreviated. The term stakeholder, meaning those impacted by an organization's activities, was used to describe corporate owners beyond shareholders as a result of an influential book by R Freeman in 1984.
Hey i didn't know this :) Great!
The key factors for successful CSR Commitment from key people – directors, owners, senior managers;
2. Ensuring that the values and vision of the CSR approach are integrated into the business and its culture;
3. Integrating the CSR approach and any associated practices and tools, with the C. strategy, core business, mainstream management processes and policies, and
everyday operational practice. This might mean adapting existing systems, or adopting or developing new ones;
4. Setting appropriate goals or targets, related to the core business, developing a staged plan for achieving them (including some quick wins), evaluating progress towards them, and communicating this appropriately;
I think also, the availability of easily accessible and specific advice, and appropriate, effective and credible tools and initiatives which the company can learn from when developing its own approach, use, or join in with, which are suitable to its circumstances or are flexible enough to be enable the company to learn over time, innovate and respond to circumstances.
CSR is an evolving concept that currently does not have a universally accepted definition. Generally, CSR is understood to be the way firms integrate social, environmental and economic concerns into their values, culture, decision making, strategy and operations in a transparent and accountable manner and thereby establish better practices within the firm, create wealth and improve society.
Corporate social responsibility (CSR) is also known by a number of other names: corporate responsibility, corporate accountability, corporate ethics, corporate citizenship, sustainability, stewardship, triple bottom line and responsible business, to name just a few.
The World Business Council for Sustainable Development has described CSR as the business contribution to sustainable economic development. Building on a base of compliance with legislation and regulations, CSR typically includes "beyond law" commitments and activities pertaining to:
corporate governance and ethics
health and safety
environmental stewardship
human rights (including core labour rights)
human resource management
And also I think •community involvement, development and investment
corporate philanthropy and employee volunteering
customer satisfaction and adherence to principles of fair competition
anti-bribery and anti-corruption measures
accountability, transparency and performance reporting
supplier relations, for both domestic and international supply chains.
Generally, CSR is understood to be the way firms integrate social, environmental and economic concerns into their values, culture, decision making, strategy and operations in a transparent and accountable manner and thereby establish better practices within the firm, create wealth and improve society.
Above all, CSR is about performance: moving beyond words on a page to effective and observable actions and societal impacts. Performance reporting is all part of transparent, accountable and, hence, credible corporate behaviour. There is considerable potential for problems when stakeholders perceive that a firm is just engaging in a public relations exercise and cannot demonstrate concrete actions that lead to real social and environmental benefits

Why don't you write something in regard with the socially responsible events that are going on these days in Macedonia? There are so many events, and they should also be your "go" to succeed in this game?
Success is your second name! I believe in you!
You are leaders!
Nothing can stop the man with the right mental attitude from achieving his goal; Keep going on guys
The talent of success is nothing more than doing what you can do, well
Good. You hv a great vision
The man who makes a success of an important venture never wails for the crowd. He strikes out for himself. It takes nerve, it takes a great lot of grit; but the man that succeeds has both. Anyone can fail. The public admires the man who has enough confidence in himself to take a chance. These chances are the main things after all. The man who tries to succeed must expect to be criticized. Nothing important was ever done but the greater number consulted previously doubted the possibility. Success is the accomplishment of that which most people think can't be done.
tnx for the support keep supporting us with your likes and comments
you are so loved :) hope you have successfully made other ppl think about CRS activities in Macedonia.

Skeptics say that often, good works are just a publicity stunt or a public relations ploy. There is no doubt that companies practicing social responsibility often, and probably usually, have ulterior motives.
If businesses have obligations to do something for society, it is because you and I have exactly the same obligations
the notion of “returning” something to the community and "giving back" to society for the firm’s good fortune is fallacious.
It should be the role of individuals, not business, to provide for such needs since for business to go beyond profit maximization would not be in shareholders' best interests and would constitute social engineering, an improper corporate function.
Example : Wal-Mart refuses to carry CDs with lyrics or cover art it finds offensive (and in the process probably actually satisfies a customer group larger than teenagers—their parents).
Since the industrial revolution, companies have attempted to internalize the benefits and externalize the costs of their actions where feasible - Freeman
Today successful companies can be less than fully efficient and less than entirely satisfy consumer wants
free-market forces ensure that maximum social benefits will be achieved at minimum social costs when each company tries to maximize profits. true or falce??
Being socially responsible does not necessarily mean profits will fall indeed, they might rise because of the favorable publicity and goodwill, enhanced employee morale leading to higher productivity, and less government intervention, which historically has led to excessive power, tyranny, corruption, and abuse of rights...
humanitarian CSR is favored over government welfare in that the aid is voluntarily, more personally and perhaps more efficiently bestowed, whereas state contributions come via the inefficiency and plodding pace of government bureaucracy and legislators through faceless bureaucrats.
if a firm adopts an inner-city school and pours resources into it, there
is no guarantee that the business will immediately gain when tomorrow’s workers are better educated, as they could work for other area organizations or even move away
Humanitarian CSR includes all philosophies, policies, procedures, and actions intended to enhance society’s welfare and improve the quality of life..
Ethical duties overcome the limitations of legal duties.
BRAVO zenski! HRABRO do finale!
The notion that business has duties to society is firmly entrenched, although in the past several decades there has been a revolution in the way people view the relationship between business and society...
The legitimacy of CSR relates to a set of fundamental and crucial questions: Why do corporations exist? Should enterprises also be concerned with their social performance as well as economic results? If so, what does it mean to be “socially responsible”? Should economic performance be sacrificed for social performance?
this project has a good structure and vision.

Since the late 1990s, socially responsible investing has become increasingly defined as a means to promote environmentally sustainable development.[9] Many investors consider effects of climate change a significant business and investment risk.
According to Immanuel Kant's Categorical Imperative, morality lies in actions not in outcomes. With this knowledge one could propose that the act of lending money is not in and of itself immoral and according to Kant's perspective banks should not be judged as moral or immoral based on the outcomes of their lending.
Good job BAZINGA! Keep it up!
Samo napred!
Ethical banks cannot solely rely upon the legal system to determine whether or not a potential client has acted unethically or whether or not their future plans are unethical. This is because of the wide range of laws throughout the world. While a business may be lawful in the international setting, this does not mean that the laws were up to the moral standards in which the bank originates. For example, extensive pollution and labor laws that would not be considered lawful in many developed countries are allowed in many lesser-developed countries.
SG's ethics is concerned with the well being of employees, employee and customer satisfaction, benefits, wages, unionization, fair sex and race representation, and the banks environmental standing.
Environment is a key focus amongst ethical banks (in this field specially called sustainability or green banks) as well as amongst many conventional banks that wish to appear more ethically oriented or that see switching to more environmental practices to be to their advantage. Some view this move as green washing.
Numerous ethical banks (as well as some conventional banks) create initiates that allow the banker to contribute to organizations that have positive societal/environmental impacts either in the local community or in developing countries.

What banks do is find a way of managing a business by considering the impact of activities on customers, suppliers, employees, shareholders, communities and other stakeholders, as well as the environment. CSR is linked to business goals, but there is debate about the genuineness of CSR... RIGHT?
CSR and Sustainability, while growing rapidly these days in corporate participation and individual awareness, can still be a tough topic to get across to general audiences. I’ve done my time, like many other practitioners, advocates, and professionals, talking until I hear the “I get it” from the interested but uninformed.
Banks which lack CSR activities are undesirable
83% of people trust a company more if it is socially responsible
The corporate social responsibility view is that business organisation should be concerned with social issues
Good luck girls.
So sreka devojcinja!
AJDE BAZINGAAAAA!!!
Mnogu ste jaki!
BEST of luck!
There is one and only one social responsibility of business- to use its resources and engage in activities designed to increase its profit so long as it stays will the rules of the game, which is to say, engages in open and free competition, without deception or fraud - Milton Friedman, American economist
Girls there are people who would argue that it is not the job of business organisations to be concerned about social issues and problems.. What can you do about it? ..
Here are the four dimensions of corporate responsibility
- Economic - responsibility to earn profit for owners
- Legal - responsibility to comply with the law (society’s codification of right and wrong)
- Ethical - not acting just for profit but doing what is right, just and fair
- Voluntary and philanthropic - promoting human welfare and goodwill
Conducting business in an ethical way and in the interests of the wider community!
there is an overlap between CSR and business ethics
Moze, moze... :))

Happiness is a choice. You can completely choose to be happy at work or not. We all wish to have the best employer in the world, but, face it, this is impossible. So, think positively about your work. Dwell on the aspects of your work that you like. At the same time, avoid negative people and gossip. Find coworkers you like and enjoy and spend your time with them. Your choices at work largely define your experience. Unhappiness at work is causing serious harm. Since, we spend more time at work than with your family, friends, and hobbies, naturally it should be worth every minute. Hating your job is not an inconvenience, it’s a serious problem. It can cause stress and depression. Ultimately, unhappy at work can kill you.
It's nice to know that banks consider CSR and its related activities as a path to ensure achievement of compliance and to go beyond thus revealing the vision of a form of ‘continuum’ rather than as a sharp division between compliance and beyond compliance activities.
Transitioning from international development to corporate social responsibility is rare as most businesses engage current employees to perform this work. I like what Societe Generale is doing!
BAZINGA you are the best!!! See you in Paris!
There is a growing interest, therefore, in businesses taking a lead in addressing those issues in which they have an interest where national government have failed to come up with a solution.
Let's go let's go!!!
The one and only BAZINGA!!! Who is who btw? :)
Ajde ajde mrdnete od toa 10-to mesto! Sakam da ve vidam u finale!!!

Ajde zenski uste malce vi ostana! hrabro do finale!
Best page!! good luck!!!
Bon courage, les filles
Training is vital, as CSR will only have an impact if employees are engaged: attitudes or behaviour won’t change otherwise. Effectively measure and evaluate CSR, otherwise the time, effort and money invested are based on assumptions, not results.
One thing that is for sure - the pressure on business to play a role in social issues will continue to grow. Over the last ten years, those institutions which have grown in power and influence have been those which can operate effectively within a global sphere of operations. These are effectively the corporates and the NGOs.... Those institutions which are predominantly tied to the nation state have been finding themselves increasingly frustrated at their lack of ability to shape and manage events. These include national governments, police, judiciary and others...
Risk in HR?? The trust built through successful CSR is hard to regain if lost. HR needs to ensure that their organisation’s CSR can stand up to the inevitable scrutiny by stakeholders, and that training and communication mean it’s embedded throughout the culture of an organisation!
Good luck UACS
The way a company treats its employees contributes directly to it being seen as willing to accept its wider responsibilities. Building credibility and trusting their employer are being increasingly seen as important by employees when they choose who they want to work for.
It's a fact that HR has a key role in making CSR work. CSR without HR runs the risk of being dismissed as PR or shallow ‘window-dressing’. And CSR is an opportunity for HR to demonstrate a strategic focus and act as a business partner...
Companies increasingly need to co-ordinate their CSR activities and demonstrate their commitment to CSR. Effective CSR depends on being seen as important throughout an organisation. Delivery, not rhetoric, is the key to stakeholders developing trust in an organisation.
Ok listen, the top five most important issues represent a cross section of social, environmental and governance topics, namely:
Pay employees competitive wages and benefits
Provide training and educational opportunities for employees
Be honest and transparent about their business practices and manufacturing processes
Ensure that their suppliers respect human rights
See that? The TOP THINGS that consumers want companies to do when they consider responsible behaviors is treat their employees right - care for their economic and professional well being!!!
Corporate practices are so transparent that those companies which do not deal with the core issues of how their CSR and Sustainability practices are embedded in all management decisions may lose not only the best talent but also consumers!
Girls CSR for HR is not just something that companies should do to make themselves feel good. Consumers are noticing! Every employee is also a consumer. Company practices are an open secret. When I started to work for a multi-national corporation over 25 years ago, I was told that my salary is personal and I should keep it to myself. Would that fly today? I don't think so..
Winter in Paris!! WOW! I wish you victory!!!
You can do it! If you need help with the case let me know!
Ajde Makedonija u finale!!! So sreka!
Do well! Do good!
CSR strategies and programmes can help manage this risk by creating an environment where staff can enjoy their work and where they can feedback concerns about the company’s behaviour so action can be taken - for example, the identification of illegal workers in the supply chain...
Last year, a survey of UK businesses active in CSR found that less than a fifth had teams dedicated to the function. Over 80% placed CSR in public relations and HR accounted for a quarter. However, the topic of CSR is becoming a must for HR because of the growing recognition that staffing is an area of risk to business.
Interesting post
"Be energy-wise, think about where you can save. As a small business you do not necessarily have to report CSR activities, but any CSR communications should be carefully checked for greenwashing. It is very easy for CSR to be misinterpreted and for it to turn into bad PR.CSR matters not only to consumers, but also other businesses that are now actively scrutinizing the sustainability of their supply chains, as well as eco- and socially conscious employees who see social responsibility as an attractive job benefit"
Good luck!
Many in the CSR field are closing the year with much optimism and faith that things will continue to change for the better. Perhaps this is the most encouraging trend of all!!
Good luck girls! I like your posts!
Ten companies in Asia were recognized for their outstanding corporate social responsibility initiatives, world-class products, programs and services at the 3rd Annual Global CSR Awards 2011 held in conjunction with The Global CSR 2011 Summit last 11th August 2011 in Cebu, Philippines
People have greater respect for different cultures, their values, and their national autonomy. This is equalizing the give and take of trading relationships. Successful companies are those that recognize that they can be respectful partners with countries and individuals with whom they do business...
Bazinga I believe that in 2011 we will see more companies incorporating CSR business strategies because the win-win to business as well as the community will become more evident; there will be a continued move away from the should reason for involvement...
In 2011, it will become clearer that the most effective way to enlist companies in CSR is to demonstrate the benefits of CSR to companies as well as communities--the win-win. Telling companies that they should do something, especially on moral grounds, is not a highly effective way to motivate deeply committed action, especially when the moral case to spend shareholder money is debatable.

"If Europe and its enterprises are to reap the full benefits of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), it is vital to make sure that SMEs are fully engaged and that what they do is fully recognised.
This is a particular challenge because CSR as a term and as a definable business concept has been created mainly by and for larger companies......" ec.europa.eu/enterprise/

Macedonia developed its National CSR Agenda a couple of years ago and it is supposed to help the nation join the European Union and attract foreign investments. In fact Macedonian businesses have no choice but to change the way they perform their daily commercial activities. Aware of all these details, the Government of Macedonia decided to work proactively and developed the National CSR Agenda.
The Macedonian Government’s vision of corporate social responsibility is as follows:
- active use of the modern international community’s attention to CSR issues in order to attract and develop investments in Macedonia;
- encourage businesses, public and non-governmental organizations to take into account their economic, social, and environmental impact;
- encourage businesses, public and non-governmental organizations to resolve the key problems on the basis of their competence at the local, regional, and national levels;
- allocation of resources to ensure creation of opportunities;
consideration of legislative changes which could create favourable conditions.

After the recent financial crisis, the importance of transparency and addressing all stakeholder needs has become unquestionable as a means to maintaining economic stability. EVERBODY VOTE FOR THIS TEAM!
The changing global environment is challenging companies to look beyond financial performance to drive business. Business leaders are increasingly realizing the need to integrate environmental and social issues within the business strategy. An emerging trend is the inclusion of Corporate Responsibility elements, especially climate change, into the CEO agenda. Most of the companies are now taking measures to combat climate change and leverage the Kyoto mechanism to adopt cleaner technology and also generate additional revenues.
Your message reflects the Occupy movement worldwide!
Change the world one person at a time!
I read somewhere that an Indian company adopted a Government school as its social responsibility. They strongly believe that children are the foundation of the Indian nation and they could be helped. The reason for adopting this particular school was the poor management of the school in terms of infrastructure, resources and quality of education. The company’s commitment to the school went much beyond just providing monetary support towards infrastructure and maintenance of school building.... That is pure csr and no profitability...
Philanthropy at Cisco is about building strong and productive global communities - communities in which every individual has the means to live, the opportunity to learn, and the chance to give back. The company pursues a strong “triple bottom line” which is described as profits, people and presence. The company promotes a culture of charitable giving and connects employees to nonprofit organizations serving the communities where they live. Cisco invests its best-in-class networking equipment to those nonprofit organizations that best put it to work for their communities, eventuating in positive global impact. It takes its responsibility seriously as a global citizen. Education is a top corporate priority for Cisco, as it is the key to prosperity and opportunity.
Let's go A CSR REVOLUTION!
Sustainability is so important in today's global economy. Great initiative you are taking in being involved in this competition - you have my vote!

CSR and everybody wins!!!
check out this team stirring up buzz, you got my vote
Auto makers have profited from responding to consumer demand for more fuel-efficient vehicles, a plus for the environment. And many companies have boosted profits while enhancing social welfare by reducing their energy consumption and thus their costs. So maybe CSR is the danger, not the solution..
The video below reminded me of you guys!!!
It is at TED2010 where Bill Gates unveils his vision for the world's energy future, describing the need for "miracles" to avoid planetary catastrophe and explaining why he's backing a dramatically different type of nuclear reactor. He notes the necessary goal is to have zero carbon emissions globally by 2050.
http://www.ted.com/talks/bill_gates.html
KEEP IT UP GUYS!!!!
Maybe appeals to CSR are not an effective way to strike a balance between profits and the public good, and they may be a distraction from more effective initiatives, such as government regulation. Have you thought about that?
Check out this video! Great example of a company participating in csr. And who doesn't love polar bears :)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bdxrVabe_C0
It is an illusion, the reality is that when companies do well by doing good, the driving force is the pursuit of profit, not a commitment to social welfare. And more often profits and social welfare are at odds and executives can’t be expected to heed the call for social responsibility at the expense of shareholders... I speak from personal experience..
BAZINGA napred!!!! Se gledame vo Paris :))
Vous avez le soutien de Chuck Norris !
Because companies sometimes can profit from acting in the public interest, it fuels the belief that executives have a responsibility to serve not only their shareholders but also some larger social purpose. Illusion or reality? What do you think?
Fact: Very simply, in cases where private profits and public interests are aligned, the idea of corporate social responsibility is irrelevant: Companies that simply do everything they can to boost profits will end up increasing social welfare. In circumstances in which profits and social welfare are in direct opposition, an appeal to corporate social responsibility will almost always be ineffective, because executives are unlikely to act voluntarily in the public interest and against shareholder interests.
good luck!!! ;))
and check out out blog here: http://www.wix.com/synergycsr/mne
:))
The real challenge the world faces today is for people at the top of the business world to do the “right” thing for themselves, their children and the world.
bonne chance
The key question to ask is how can we as individuals and businesses improve the world?
Even President Obama has been urging businesses to do the right thing and become socially responsible. His approach and vision is refreshing from all that has gone before us for so long! BAZINGA you are the best!!!
Vi nikako da stanete :) stalno rastete... :)
With the unscrupulous behavior of the major banks over the last few years which has led to the current worldwide economic downturn, never before has it been so pertinent that business people are seen to be doing the right thing....
With the world economic and business outlook still so uncertain, a key question is just how the businesses world can continue to do good as well as maintain their bottom line...
Guys you are missing the point here. We do not care how profitable companies are from practicing CSR as long as they are socially responsible.. That is the whole purpose of this training game, to increase awareness of how important CSR is for the well being of every person on our planet called EARTH :))
Fact: Modern theoretical and empirical analyses indicate that firms can strategically engage in socially responsible activities to increase private profits. Given that the firm’s stakeholders may value the firm’s social efforts, the firm can obtain additional benefits from these activities, including: enhancing the firm’s reputation and the ability to generate profits by differentiating its product, the ability to attract more highly qualified personnel or the ability to extract a premium for its products.
GUYS COME ON, It is generally held that CSR could increase company profits and thus most large companies are actively engaged in it. That's why SD is engaged in it or else wouldn't be! Don't be blinded by the whole sustainable development crap..
There is every sign that we can deal with various important sustainability issues: natural and semi-natural habitat; fish stocks; air, water and soil pollution; waste; energy production; third world labor standards. These all need capitalism and democracy to flourish. NGOs can be useful only and so far as they accept that they and their CSR is of marginal value...
However excellent topic, keep up the good work girls! You have my support!
CSR delivers firms to the NGOs who talk nonsense about environment/community. CSR wrongly supposes that business knows what is good for the community, or that NGOs do. CSR deflects people from the understanding that profit is socially-benign. The Triple Bottom Line supposes that profit and CSR go together. They may well not. Enron and Shell demonstrate that we don't need firms to pretend to be virtuous, we need them to be honest. A firm's "stakeholders" suffer when it does: NGOs are not their stakeholders!!!
Exactly! I'll just add that the rise in non-profit business could be the turning point for minimizing corporate profits for a given consumer product with much less expectation for this standing rule of continuous growth. If “CSR” helps corporations migrate away from a historical business model towards one of a more sustainable fiscal system then it’s certainly a step in the right direction.
HI Bradley!
Yes, CSR has led to greater Nonprofit and for-profit collaborations and this trend will continue. Cross section collaboration is necessary to meet our shared environmental and social challenges. No one company, NGO, or industry can make substantial improvements in isolation. Cooperative effort is required!
As a CSR evangelist I instantly thought “NOOOO!” Just look at Dow chemical’s huge partnership with The Nature Conservancy. CSR initiatives and NGOs are wonderful complements of one another, and they make each other stronger.
We, as a team, believe that the answer is NO! Because If anything, CSR expands the opportunities available to civil society organizations..
Well i have got one.. It says that SG is constantly developing innovative CSR initiatives, built on its values: professionalism, team spirit and innovation. It has also created a feedback system and on-going dialogue with the stakeholders, such as the NGOs. However do CSR activities threathen the nonprofit sector?
Good evening Charlie,
And no i haven't worked there, so please tell me what you know.
What's different? Have you worked there?
Where did all our comments go??? Oh wait, they are here but not enough!!
So what's on the discussion board for tonight? Any ideas?
Charlie..
Your reality and mine are different.
Salute
Marija,
you're always so beautiful...

Good morning Erika,
You speak about Starbucks. But have you ever worked in a starbucks coffee ??
Reality is different...

Najubaviot team od Makedonija!! Znam deka ke bidete vo 10 najdobri!
Let us conclude that CSR is essentially about companies being prepared to take the lead, and illustrate to the world and to their
stakeholders voluntarily that they take CSR seriously. CSR is always about going beyond the law. Ideally it's is a win win scenario, whereby companies increase their profitability and society benefits at the same time...
Being socially responsible has its supporters and its critics. For those in support, CSR represents a means through which business can demonstrate responsibility for society’s wider concerns, including the need to preserve the environment, respect fundamental human rights, and respond to issues raised by stakeholders in the marketplace, for example those of consumers.
The European Commission establish an Expert Group on CSR reporting in the retail financial services market, comprising representatives from both the industry associations and consumer groups, with a view to:
1. Ensuring that a comprehensive database of CSR reports is maintained with open access for researchers and consumer agencies
2. Providing support for a network of researchers to be established across the EU and encouraging the formation of CSR fora at the Member State level to feed into its work
3. Developing a formal agreement with the various EU and national industry trade associations concerning the indicators to be included in future provider reports, based on best practice
4. Agreeing appropriate quality assurance mechanisms to be used by providers to improve the reliability of statements and information presented in CSR reports
There are four broad reasons why banks need CSR. Fulfillment of business ethics, community support, third party endorsement and answering the demands of the community. If you girls are interested in this, have a look at this website http://www.imagemanagement.in/articles/00084-banking-on-some-csr-goodwill-ndash-how-can-pr-help3.html

Deutsche Bank Corporate Social Responsibility UK promotes and coordinates socially responsible activities on behalf of the Bank and its employees in the UK. The Bank supports charities and community organizations within our five key principles: Enabling Talent through Education, Creating Opportunities through Social Investments and Fostering Creativity through Art and Music. The underlying principle for all these themes however is our dedication to Committing Ourselves through Corporate Volunteering and Ensuring Viability through Sustainability. Each year, the Corporate Citizenship UK team invests over £6 million in support to some of London’s most disadvantaged communities.
Starbucks estime que la conduite éthique des affaires et en s'efforçant de faire la bonne chose est essentielle à la réussite de l'entreprise. Les entreprises devraient suivre leur exemple!
Starbucks’ efforts in being responsible for society and the environment can be major inspiration for many small businesses. This Starbucks Coffee Company is an example of how any business can take a huge part in making changes for the better in the world today, as well as effectively use this participation to benefit the business. I LOVE STARBUCKS!!!!!!!
Let’s face it. The world’s population is growing, but natural resources are dwindling. Consumers are now more aware that what they buy can also affect society and the environment, and have thus, become more “ethical” when making decisions related to their purchases.
Great video girls!! When people go inside a Starbucks outlet to buy their favorite coffee, the first thing most will look to get is a handful of tissues, maybe something to stir their coffee with or an extra sugar or cream. Did you ever stop to look at the tissues supplied in their stores and wonder why it’s so different from the rest?
Human Resource Departments play a critical role in ensuring that the company adopts Corporate Social Responsibility programs. So invest in HR!
When companies are global, an important challenge in garnering success is to respect other cultures and workforce environments and start forming a global profile or social consciousness. Recognize these differences with a sound Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) plan that can simultaneously increase shareholder value, boost employee engagement and increase employer brand recognition.
The firm of the future is expected to have undergone significant transformation such that CSR no longer becomes managed as a separate deliverable, but is part of the experience of being an employee in an organization that lives its values. For human resource professionals embarking on CSR or deepening their CSR experience, this road map can help them understand their role in sustainability and CSR and how they
can foster an environment that embeds a CSR ethic..
Regardless of the point of view, all agree that effective HR leadership on CSR integration requires Board, CEO and executive commitment to be successful. Indeed, the road map is predicated on the assumption of this top level commitment. However more and more organizations are committing to sustainability and it is all that matters. That's what this Citizen Act initiative is all about!
Held og lykke smukke piger!

A common strategy to CSR which many people have started to accept is the strategy of society-based advancement. In this technique, local communities cooperatively work together with businesses to help better the businesses. One of them is how Shell Foundation was involved with Flower Valley, SA. Shell created Early Learning Centers in Flower Valley in efforts to help training of community kids. They also sought to help grown ups in the community acquire new skills.
One more instance is Marks & Spencer. They have been very involved recently in the Flower Valley local community and additionally are already marketing the building of trade networks in in. This is assisting to guarantee reasonable purchase movements in fair trade.
ORSE is a French network aimed at researching and promoting corporate social responsibility and SRI and it is the only French organisation constituting a think tank bringing together so many diverse actors, all committed to SRI and CSR development.

It's interesting that Société Générale aims is to become a benchmark reference in Corporate Social Responsibility, thus affording it a major competitive edge.
That is very much true Misko and Nela and that's why most of the companies today are striving towards CSR. In addition many customers chose their companies according to that fact.
Yes it does Misko and developing CSR policies can really boost a company's profile..

Corporate social responsibility (CSR) is about understanding your business' impact on the wider world and considering how you can use this impact in a positive way.
A major lesson of the global crisis is the imperative need for sound and comprehensive risk governance. Board members and senior executives of banks need to have an integrated view of risk control and value creation. They must be clear on how risk categories interact and impact economic capital allocation and the value of the business; and assess how re-regulation and, Basel 3, will impact the banking industry. In fact, any senior executive working in a business exposed to market, credit, operational or strategic risk, or to the growing concerns of liquidity, reputation and franchise risk should have a knowledge-based overview of risk management.
The Risk Management in Banking programme gives you a broad overview of risk governance. Whatever your background, you will benefit from the inclusive, non-technical approach, and feel comfortable learning within an environment more similar to that of a professional workshop.

Ignoring CSR means running the risk of losing everything!
Keep up the good work! I am proud of you!
We think we are doing pretty good, what do you say?? :)))
CSR means socially and environmentally friendly actions not required by law, going beyond compliance, privately providing public goods, or voluntarily internalizing externalities. It is an important economic phenomenon with broad implications for firms, employees, consumers, investors, governments and NGOs alike.
Fala Miki!!! Se obiduvame :)

Just sharing some interesting facts

"It's not so important who starts the game but who finishes it." Good luck!
Your business doesn't exist in isolation nor is it simply a way of making money. Your employees depend on your business. Customers, suppliers and the local community are all affected by your business and what you do. Your products, and the way you make them, also have an impact on the environment.
Corporate social responsibility (CSR) is about understanding your business' impact on the wider world and considering how you can use this impact in a positive way. CSR can also be good for your bottom line.
It means taking a responsible attitude, going beyond the minimum legal requirements and following straightforward principles that apply whatever the size of your business.

I think it's crazy for us to play games with our children's future. We know what's happening to the climate, we have a highly predictable set of consequences if we continue to pour greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. ~ Bill Clintons speech at a United Nations Climate Conference in 2005
Excellent choice for the video. Starbucks is a company with a strong vision and it links its objectives to CSR and its business strategy to reputation and risk management. Gotta love them! :)
Koleski bravo, izbivte na prvo mesto! Ke bide napnato do kraj! Sepak navivam za vas! Neka vi se mnozat bodovite vi posakuvam pobeda!!!!
Well.. it is surely only a matter of time before all privately held businesses have to adhere to greater pressure to do business in a more socially responsible and transparent manner. The businesses that are responsive, quick and innovative will be the ones who not only survive the change, but emerge as winners!!!
Some interesting facts:
Business ethics is a key factor for recruitment and retention in Denmark’s tight labour market. Privately held businesses ignoring CSR issues are facing future skills shortages that will threaten their global competitiveness.
Private businesses in Malaysia are being forced to change their products and services to reduce their environmental impact. Businesses satisfying the global demand for more ethical production and delivery are best placed to capture the rapidly growing market generated by discerning consumers and multinationals.
Many privately held businesses in Argentina are experiencing pressure from their multinational customers to become a more ethical supplier. As a result, CSR credentials are becoming a priority for Argentine businesses as they compete in the global marketplace.

Podrska ide na sve strane! Malo sam citao vase komentare, i stvarno svaka vam cast na motivaciji da nadjete ljude da pisu prava misljenja i predlazu njihove ideje :)
The 4 key to success are: Motivation, Education, Actions and Relations
I like what you are doing girls! I think that people are not aware how much power they have and how small everyday decisions can make a huge difference. For example on the market we have numerous toothpastes, let’s say next time we walk in the supermarket we pick the one whose manufacturer takes special care about environment or funds some children organization. If we want to change the world we need to change ourselves
Najdobri ste!!!! Vi posakuvam pobeda!
Koleski izdrzete muski do kraj! Gledam deka imate golema poddrska! So sreka!
OMG this looks like so much fun! good luck!!!!!!!!!!!!!
companies should take into account cultural, gender, age and ethnic diversity, both within their workforces as well as in the society as a whole.
To be social responsible means that companies have to actively take responsibility for their actions, for example, by accounting for their impact on society and the environment.
Corporate culture, is the basis for all action, needs to be translated into everyday business processes and operations. CSR therefore, represents the tools for implementing the company's corporate culture putting it into practice. Which unfortunately that is not the case in Macedonia.
I agree with Silvana it is true that our companies canot compare with the
foreign companies the only thing that they have in common is their motive for profit :D
taka e macki :D
i agree :D
Companies need to recognise their responsibility for the social and environmental impact of their operations. CSR in action is about capacity building for sustainable livelihoods. It respects cultural differences and finds ways to communicate with employees, the community and governments.
One company's corporate culture is the result of an evolutionary process, being established throughout its history and formed through its leaders' beliefs and attitudes. As such the culture of a company influences every step the company takes and represents therefore its only instrument for survival. The questions remains of how to translate corporate culture into everyday business activities successfully.
Corporate Culture comprises the attitudes, values, beliefs, norms and customs of a company, defining the way it acts in all its business operations as well as toward its stakeholders.
fala katerince ne samo da glasas i komentarce neka ima i love u i fala za podrskata
bravo maco sekoj den ke glasam da znaes kis4e i stiskam palci :D
It's best that we continue the discussion in English (so the whole world understands), We have a few interesting questions. How do the corporate culture and CSR relate in one company and if we compare Macedonian to foreign companies, how much responsibility, respect, transparency, sustainability or communication do they take into account in terms of CRS???
bravo devojki svaka vi cast prodolzete so diskusiite i prasanjata samo taka napred do pobeda :D
Vi blagodarime uste ednas na vremeto sto go odvojuvate za nas i milo ni e sto ste aktivni vo diskusijata. Zalosno e sto vo Makedonija poveketo kompanii sto se promoviraat kako opstestveno odgovorni, go pravat toa so zadni nameri ( pogolem profit ili plasman).
I sekako dobar provod vo Paris.. :))
Samo napred devojki!! Mnogu uspeh
Like i od mene !
